Tell us a little about yourself! Age, hobbies, passions, where you grew up, where you live now, and any other fun facts!

I’m 37 years old and I love designing clothes. I grew up in Nigeria and moved to the US two years ago. I live in the state of Maine now and for the first time in my life, I actually LOVE my job as a Data Scientist.

What were you doing professionally before bootcamp?

I was working as a network administrator, but I hated every day I went to work.

Did you face any obstacles in bootcamp? If so, how did you overcome them?

I have three kids, all less than 5 yrs of age at that time. Juggling between work and taking care of my kids was not easy. I could only study at night when they go to sleep. Throughout the duration of the program, I was having less than 5 hours sleep on most nights.

What was it like during your first few weeks in bootcamp? What did you enjoy? What did you struggle with?

I only struggled with studies and taking care of my family. The instructor, James, was awesome! The course material was very good and comprehensive. I enjoyed the fact that a lot of my course mates were always ready to help out.

What advice would you share with others considering bootcamp? What about those currently in bootcamp?

The only difficult part is making up your mind to start. Once you start everything will seem easy. For those already in the bootcamp, do not take lightly your projects and of course the career services, these two things helped me land my first job in less than two months of graduation.

Do you have any fun memories to share about your time in bootcamp?

The bootcamp was interactive and there were some really funny people who made it even more exciting. And my Instructor, James, made even the difficult parts seem like child’s play.

What was your favorite stack, project, or module to learn? Why?

I enjoyed all the stacks.

As graduation approached, how confident were you in your new skill set?

I wasn’t confident at all, because I felt the real job can’t be this easy. But after I got the job, it turned out that I actually have what it takes to start my journey as a data scientist. As you work on a variety of projects, you learn more and more skills along the way.

Aside from credentials, what else did you leave bootcamp with? (soft skills, motivation, confidence, etc.)

All of it! Soft skills, motivation, and confidence.

How did the job hunt go? Where did you end up working?

I didn’t pass the first interview I got, and it’s simply because I had not even started my career services session then. When I failed, I realized it wasn’t because I didn’t have the skills, but rather because I lacked confidence and I didn’t even understand most of the questions and hence gave wrong answers. For the second interview I got, I made sure I was well prepared and my advisor, Joseph, was super helpful! We practiced a lot, until I was so confident that I even impressed myself. I made sure I did a background check on the company and the position, so I made sure all my answers were leaning towards what was required of that position. I’m now working at WhyteSpyder as a Data Scientist.

What did it feel like to receive your first job offer? Or to get that first paycheck in tech?

I was proud of myself! I threw a party!

What are your goals and dreams for the future? Career or otherwise.

My goal was to become a data scientist. Now that I am one, my dream is to reach the peak of my career as a data scientist and establish a company of data science and analytics back in Nigeria.
