My Coding Bootcamp Experience | The Birthplace of My Startup

I’m proud to say that my coding bootcamp experience started here at Coding Dojo: the birthplace of my startup! My name is AJ Agrawal and I’m the CEO and Co-Founder of Alumnify, a mobile application that allows Alumni to meet face to face based on shared interests. I graduated from the Dojo in December 2013. Prior to that, I had graduated in May 2013 with a degree in Finance from the University of San Diego. Right before Coding Dojo, I graduated from the Velocity.SI Accelerator in Indiana where I went through an intense bootcamp on start-up strategy and execution. By the time I embarked upon my Coding Dojo journey, my co-founder and I had the idea for Alumnify but lacked the ability to make our vision into an actual product.

During my time at the Dojo, I recruited another student, Michael Greenberg, and we joined forces to create a beta version of our product. As I spent more and more time at the Dojo, I realized that some of the best benefits of the bootcamp were the amazing people I met who could help with my venture. One of the greatest pieces of advice I can give for people at Coding Dojo is to take the time and get to know your classmates. Great companies are built by having great people, and the bootcamp is able to bring in hardworking, smart, and dedicated students together under one roof, which gives you the ability to come together and build meaningful relationships and products.

After creating version one of Alumnify at Coding Dojo, we were accepted into the T Minus Six accelerator in Columbia, South Carolina. We have successfully raised over $100,000 for Alumnify and now have expanded our team from 2 to 6 amazing people. We’ve been able to get commitments from 9 Universities to trial our beta product starting in May, and have been featured in entrepreneur.com, the San Diego Business Journal, the Wall Street Journal, and just last week won $40,000 and first place at the San Diego V2 pitch competition.

It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come since our time at the bootcamp. Who would have thought a few months at a programming bootcamp could lead to such a fun journey? We’re excited for the road ahead and proud to say our first line of code for Alumnify was written at Coding Dojo.
